My Plesure Reding 60-120

For several days, Drouet tooke Carrie out sight-seeing, to the theater, and out to eat. Her misgivings about leaving Minnie and Hanson were swept away. Drouet invited Hurstwood to his home one evening for a game of cards, wanting to introduce Hurstwood to Carrie because she had moved in with him.Hurstwood lived in a fashionable three-story home with his family. Drouet said that he has told Hurstwood theyere married. Carrie asked why they could not get married in reality as well, but Drouet put her off, saying that he needed to wrap up a real estate deal first. Since Carrie didn't really love Drouet, she accepted his vague promise without further questions.
Hurstwood's elegant clothing and manners caught Carries attention. She compares him to Drouet and notices small deficiencies in her lover's personality and demeanor. Hurstwood entertained Carrie with a skilled flair, allowing her to win the card game.
Carrie tooke care to imitate all the graceful motions Drouet notes in other women, and in the process she became a girl with "considerable taste." She befriended the wife of a neighbor, Mr. Hale, who was a theater manager. In her conversations with Carrie, Mrs. Hale imparted detailed gossip about the social world of the rich and famous. One evening Drouet found Carrie in the dark with tears on her face. Carrie realized he could not sympathized with her feelings.
Hurstwood wondered how Drouet had come to win Carrie. He felt a strong attraction for her, and he knew that Drouet, whatever he may say, had no plans to marry her. Hurstwood invited the two of them out to the theater. The atmosphere of the theater enthralled Carrie. Hurstwood was in fine form, entertaining both of them; Drouet seemed dull in comparison.
