Individual Reading 11-20

The narrator arrived in Paris, where he got to know that Strickland lived in the cheapest hotel without any woman. While chatting with him Charles opened the secret that he had become interested in art. The narrator wanted Charles return home, but he refused because he didn’t want to know anything about his wife and children, as well as other people’s opinion about him. Mrs. Strickland was shocked as she couldn’t understand Charles’ sudden devotion to art. Latter Mr. Strickland started her own typewriting business while her sister took care about her children. Five years later the narrator moved to Paris where he met his old friend Dirk Strove, who was a not good artist. As things turned out Dirk knew Strickland and could arrange a meeting with him.

The article published on this website on January 17, 2013 is headlined 6th Kustendorf Film Festival kicks off .The article reports at length that the festival will bring together some of the most important filmmakers from across the world and numerous film students until January 22.
It’s an open secret that the festival is well-known for its informal atmosphere.
The festival is organized by famous Serbian film director Emir Kusturica. Emir Kusturica likes to invite both talented youths and world music and film stars to give them an opportunity to talk to each other. He calls Drvengrad ‘creative space’. In this connection it is worthwhile mentioning the fact that it often happens that even student work is shown in Kustendorf which gives the young a chance to be noticed, for example, in 2011 Russian actress and director Sonia Karpunina was awarded the festival’s main prize, the Golden Egg, for her short film The Chance, and this year 27-year-old Sonia is Kusturica’s guest for the third time with her new full-length comedy Everything Is Easy.

It was revealed that the opening ceremony began in front of St Sava's Church, on which the festival's symbol - a gold egg - was projected using light effects. This was followed by a holographic fight between Kusturica and Bruce Willis, in which the festival host's triumph symbolized a win for auteur cinema over Hollywood blockbusters.

Kusturica said the festival aspired and had been successful in presenting and supporting young people who "believe film is not just a vulgar commercial expression, but the art that Fellini and Tarkovsky talked about, and in which Miloš Forman was one of the greats." "This is our hope despite the media which are worse than Ancient Rome with its Colosseum where people were thrown to be eaten alive for the entertainment of the masses," he said.

According to Kusturica, the festival's goal is "the reincarnation of the films of the 1970s and 1980s, when cinema was a combination of entertainment and art." He then presented the Award for Future Films to acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, to whom this year's Retrospective of Greatness is dedicated.

The article concludes by saying that other guests at Kustendorf include Benh Zeitlin of the U.S., Aleksey Balabanov of Russia, Matteo Garrone of Italy, Elia Suleiman of Palestine, Peter Gothar of Hungary, Yesim Ustaoglu of Turkey), Italian actress Monica Bellucci and French actress Audrey Tautou.

In conclusion I'd like to add some more information.Competing for the gold, silver and bronze egg are 28 films by young filmmakers from 18 countries: Great Britain, Denmark, Israel, Korea, Cuba, Mexico, Germany, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Serbia, the U.S., the Philippines, France, the Netherlands, Montenegro and Switzerland.

Individual Reading part 1

The narrator recollects the circumstances in which he first met Charles Strickland, who is now famous. He begins by pointing out that there seems to be nothing special about Charles Strickland, but then says that the man is a genius. The narrator talks about how Strickland is relatively obscure in life, and that his emotional style of art is misunderstood. He then lauds the legends which have risen up about Strickland, saying that such legends are the key to immortality. So Charles Strickland disappears with no explanation. The narrator, having been sent in pursuit by the grieving and confused wife of Strickland, tracks him down in Paris. There he finds his target who is unrepentant and offers an explanation of his behaviour which is at odds with the theories of those he has left behind. Strickland is remorseless and absolutely determined to fulfill the desire he has within to paint.

Finding Neverland" (2004)

Cast: Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, Radha Mitchell, Julie Christie, Dustin Hoffman.

Director: Mark Forster

Synopsis:
In 1903, in England, the play writer James Matthew Barrie has a complete lack of inspiration, and his last work was a deceptive play. When he meets the children of the widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, he becomes friend of the family and Sylvia becomes his muse and her children the source of inspiration. James writes the successful play about "Peter Pan and Neverland".

Review:

Barrie (Johnny Depp) meets a single mother Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet) who has four little sons. One of them  Peter (Freddie Highmore) is so horrified by  his father's death that he's apparently forfeit every trace of youthful indiscretion and resourcefulness. The author is a whimsical and freakish man who interested in working and playing games with children rather than spending time with his wife (Radha Mitchell). After some time he becomes like a father and at the same time husband for Sylvia’s family. As he finds his inspiration from the relationships, a unique play about Peter Pan is born.

Speaking about the film, it is necessary to stress that the costumes are excellent and suitable for all actors. The locations are notable for their beautiful landscapes, fountains, and wealthy interiors. The music is glorious and well-fitted.

Speaking about the actors’ performance, it should be mentioned that it is great. At the core of the film, Depp’s performance suffers tremendously as a result of all that whitewashing, for his Barrie has as much depth as a water puddle. Admittedly,Finding Neverland does look great thanks to the talents of cinematographerRoberto Schaefer, production designer Gemma Jackson, and other behind-the-scenes personnel, but what saves this period melodrama from the infernal pit of mushiness is a trio of excellent actresses: Kate Winslet, Radha Mitchell, and veteran Julie Christie (above), all of whom bring a much needed sense of honesty and real feeling to the otherwise sugary proceedings.

So “Finding Neverland” is one of the best movies I have ever seen.  I like its idea and  movie details which shows the experiences of "Peter Pan" author J.M. Barrie, which lead him to write the children's classic. Finding Neverland is about hanging on to that belief in something that transcends the empirical world. It's a small, gentle, graceful motion picture .In conclusion I should point out that it’s a heartfelt, beautiful film, and one of the best dramas I've seen in years.
