The article published on the website of the newspaper "The Independent"  on Tuesday 16 October 2012 is headlined  "Clobal warming is causing more hurricanes". The article carries a lot of comment on the fact that scientists have found support for the controversial idea that global warming is causing more frequent and destructive hurricanes, a subject that has been hotly debated during the past decade. It's an open secret that data gathered from tide gauges show a significant link between both the frequency and intensity of tropical storms and increases in annual temperatures since the tidal records began in 1923.

Speaking of this situation it is interesting to note that the study found that during the 90-year period, when the average global temperature has increased by 0.7C, extreme hurricanes similar to Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005, were nearly twice as likely in warmer years as colder years.Although scientists were not able to prove that climate change is causing more large hurricanes, they believe the study is consistent with the predictions that global warming and warmer seas could bring about more intense tropical storms.

Nevertheless, there are also signs that hurricanes form when the sea's surface temperature increases above 26C. However, they result from a chaotic interaction between the difference in sea and air temperatures, humidity and wind, so there is disagreement about how frequent they will become in a warmer world.

There is every reason to believe that studying the link between global warming and tropical storms has been hampered by the lack of data on hurricanes before the satellite age. Many hurricanes out at sea were missed before the first weather satellites were launched about 40 years ago. However, a network of tide gauges around the south-east coast of the US has produced a reliable record of the rapid changes to sea level caused by storm surges resulting from tropical cyclones, said Aslak Grinsted of the Niels Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University.

All in all, the author of the article doesn't express his own opinion - he just plainly describes the fact and opinions of different scientists. However, I suppose, that he agrees with Dr Grinsted because he concludes the article with his words that refers to the a close correlation between sudden changes in sea level and historical accounts of tropical storms.

As for me I think that due to the fact that nothing stands still our society is developing, new buildings and factories are being built, and technologies are being improved. We do not notice how we affect the environment. Our planet is in trouble! Pretty much everywhere you look today you will hear or see something reminding you that our planet’s health is failing. There’re several causes of this failing.

Human activities cause climate change like increase in temperature. Many animal and plant species may be destroyed by climate change. Because many problems leading to global warming are caused or contributed to by overpopulation, people are beginning to work to reduce family sizes.  Family planning services actually help in the fight against global warming. Education is a key method of reducing the greenhouse effect.  By teaching people about such things as deforestation, environmental activists hope to prevent the problems that ultimately lead to global warming. Widespread media attention to the global warming problem is also increasing awareness.  This is causing both individuals and governments to act more responsibly towards the environment.
To sum up, environmental problems should be handled by local and international authorities also. Every single person should take care of environment and moreover we have to bring up our children to be conscious citizens of a clean and preserved planet.

  1. Irina, I completely agree with you that human activities cause climate change, as we onlz axhaust natural resources, without giving anything in return; we only cut down forests, where build factories, which, dumping their waste, pollute the river, air and land, and lead to the formation of ozone holes.

  2. I agree with you Irina. If we want to live in a green and clean planet we should start doing something know, e.g. recycling, using life bags, not driving cars so much, etc.
